Locker lock FAQs

How do I choose the best lock for my space?

Alongside the features of the individual lock, you’ll want to consider the total lockers in use, who is using the storage space, whether lockers will have shared or sole dedicated use, how you want them managed and the wider security requirements for your building.

For smaller locker spaces (1-50 lockers) we’d recommend easy to manage and cost-effective key locks, padlocks, combination locks or code locks.

For mid-sized spaces (50-200 lockers) we typically recommend battery powered digital code locks or our combination lock. Both are easy to use, and offer useful features that save on management time.

For larger scale projects (200+ lockers) smart lock systems or advanced digital code locks with integrated software applications are highly recommended. For projects of this size we’d recommend contacting us so we can learn more about your space and suggest a solution fit for purpose.

How do you operate locker locks?

Padlock receivers or hasps: Simply thread your padlock through the opening and close.

Combination locks: Use the dial to select a code, lock the door and scramble the code.

Code locks: These locks have a digital keypad and utilise a 4 digit code. This code can be either pre-programmed into the lock or you can select a unique code that resets after each use.

RFID locks: ‘Radio frequency identification’ (RFID) locks operate via encoded mifare or iclass swipe cards or key fobs. Operation is easy once installed – a swipe of a card and you’re in your locker.

What are smart locks?

Smart locks are a sophisticated access control system for lockers. Depending on the lock system, the locks will be hardwired to each locker door or they will run via WiFi.

Combined with intelligent software, smart locks can be programmed to various operation modes, providing users with RFID access to their locker. Smart lock systems can also integrate with existing access control networks within a building.

How much are locker locks?

A lock will range from a price point of $20 up to $350 each. The average price of a digital locker lock is $100.

There is always a feature vs cost equation to consider for each space. Will the lock you choose do the work you need it to do? What are the associated lifetime costs? For example, some battery locks may be cheaper on purchase, but incur costs down the line for purchasing new batteries. At Lockin we only stock premium quality battery locks with a lifetime of 2-3 years, not 3-6 months to reduce ongoing costs.

Smart locks are at the top end of the market, and though $350 per lock sounds expensive, the smart lock offers sophisticated, programmable security systems that can save thousands of dollars in management costs for larger facilities.

What is the difference between shared or dedicated user modes?

Locker locks can be programmed in a variety of different modes to suit the environments they operate within.

In shared mode the user chooses an available locker and operates it with a self-selected code or key. Once the locker is vacated, it becomes available for a different user. This is particularly useful in high traffic environments such as gyms and public areas.

In dedicated mode, the user is assigned a locker and operates it with a fixed code or key. Once set, the fixed code can only be changed by a manager. Dedicated mode works well in schools and offices where a locker belongs to one person only.
